The NIXON 51-30.
What is the appeal of this watch?
It's huge.
That's pretty much it.
Less a wristwatch than equipment
51mm case diameter.
It's less a wristwatch than a bit of gear.
The first time I put it on, I thought,
“Okay, that's way too big.”
But strangely, once you get used to this size, ordinary watches start to look a little lacking.
Even the watch shop owner was surprised
This is the only watch whose battery I have never replaced myself.
KAZUKIN has opened the case back and changed batteries himself on his G-SHOCK and the NIXON SUPERTIDE, but the 51-30 is different.
It's somehow scary.
It's 300m water resistant, and if I opened this giant watch myself and messed up, the damage would probably be big, so I always took it properly to a watch shop.
One time, as usual, I asked for a battery swap, and the elderly owner picked up the 51-30 and said one thing.
“What a huge watch!”
...If even a watch shop owner is surprised, it really is huge.
I laughed a little.
The watch I wear least often
But.
In fact, among the watches I own, this 51-30 has the fewest appearances.
The reason is simple.
It's heavy.
Really heavy.
In the morning I put it on in high spirits—“I'll go with the 51-30 today”—but by evening my wrist is saying,
“Haven't we had enough?”
The opposite of the casual ease of a G-SHOCK.
Huge.
Heavy.
Overwhelming presence.
So I don't wear it every day.
No, I can't.
Still, I sometimes want to wear it
But once in a while I desperately want to wear it.
When I take it out of the case after a long time and strap it on,
“Yeah, it really is cool.”
I think.
If you think purely in terms of efficiency, lightness and practicality, there are plenty of easier watches to use.
Even so, the 51-30 has a presence only the 51-30 has.
Huge.
Heavy.
Rarely worn.
And yet I have no intention of letting it go.
Maybe I like it including that inconvenience.
A watch you occasionally want to wear is probably a watch you truly love.

Heavy again today.
But still cool.
